It is fascinating how cloud infrastructure has evolved and how we as an industry shifted (processes and mindsets) from hardware into software, as well as how we were able to build stable and performant components that are, in many cases, better than the hardware.

We even replaced our implicit use and meaning of the word "infrastructure." When we use it, we often refer to cloud infrastructure only.

It came as no surprise that this occurred due to our utilization of software, which we can control more effectively. Additionally, software offers a shorter testing and release cycle compared to hardware, with the added benefit of being potentially cheaper (at least in theory).

This gives you all the benefits of using code to create your infrastructure, like version control, faster and safer infrastructure deployments across different environments, and having up to date documentation of your infrastructure.

The article will cover how infrastructure as code works using an analogy. We'll cover the different infrastructure as code tools available as well as declarative vs imperative code

I'll also introduce you to Terraform, which is an open source infrastructure as code tool you can use to create infrastructure across multiple cloud providers like AWS, GCP, Azure and others.

Overall, they see a lot of room for growth given all of the manual work still done by DevOps teams across organizations of all sizes.

However, IaC itself requires highly trained engineers to implement and manage within organizations, and there’s a shortage of software infrastructure engineers with IaC skills. This could favor IaC startups that are trying to offer complete solutions to customers.
